Abstract
A-Ye-Ka: Awakening the Recovery Spirit will use a revitalization and capacity-building approach to establish a recovery community organization in Cherokee, North Carolina among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The new organization will provide a vehicle for Native Americans in recovery to educate the larger community concerning the needs of recovering people, and to address the need for culturally appropriate supports for Native adolescents and adults who are walking the path of sobriety. The recovery community organization will also network with advocacy and service groups to create a comprehensive, seamless system of referral for adolescents and adults. An important goal will be incorporating Native tradition and experience into the recovery process. |
