Abstract
The Indian Township Health Center?s Wonahkik Program is a culturally based substance abuse and HIV prevention program that is committed to creating resiliency and increased coping skills in Passamaquoddy youth who are at risk for substance abuse and HIV utilizing community pipe carriers, elders, mentors, of Washington County who reflect the cultural core and values of the Indian Township community. The Wonahkik program is an innovative, early-intervention, year-round program geared at preventing HIV and substance abuse by changing life styles and values in Passamaquoddy youth from age 12-18. Based on the medicine wheel, the program focuses on delivering education on HIV and substance abuse while teaching traditional ways and values to teenagers. |
