Abstract
| The Nez Perce Tribe will use a proactive approach to prevent a potential HIV/AIDS epidemic among tribal members, particularly tribal youth ages 9 to 18. The primary focus of this intervention will be the infusion of Nez Perce cultural traditions as a basis for practices upheld as sound by the research literature-namely school-based prevention, home-based family case management and mentoring. In the context of these two main strategies we will teach healthy decision making skills, facts about HIV/AIDS, facts about substance abuse, life skills, family communication skills, personal wellness, identity development, and planning for the future. There is a wealth of knowledge and instruction in tribal beliefs and customs that will be utilized in prevention approaches through curriculum format, the basis of which has already been developed through work in substance abuse prevention with tribal youth. |
